Botox for Sweating


Sometimes sweating can become more than just a nuisance. It can become a regular embarrassment. Have you tried multiple antiperspirants, deodorants, and powders? Do you carry extra clothing, or plan your wardrobe due to fears of sweating through your shirts? This can be even more of an issue if you live in a warm climate. Luckily Botox can be an option to help reduce your excessive sweating.

  1. What is severe underarm sweating?
    Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition called severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. It results in the body sweating more than it must in order to regulate body temperature. This can interfere with clothing choices and socially awkward situations. You do not have to let it impact your life.

  2. How does BOTOX® work?
    Botox acts on the nerves the stimulate sweat glands. When those sweat glands do not get the signal to produce sweat, you don’t sweat.

  3. Where does the sweat go?
    The sweat doesn’t go anywhere. It is just not produced in the area that you have been treated with Botox. It is normal and healthy to sweat. Your body has several million sweat glands and when we get warm, those sweat glands produce sweat to cool us. For some people the amount of sweat can be very excessive.

  4. How long does Botox work?
    According to clinical studies, patients noticed drier underarms for around 6 months. Patients are frequently treated twice a year.

  5. How effective is Botox treatment?
    Results are always individual. There are also seems to be a cumulative affect with patients who are treated regularly. Patients also report that they have less sweating than prior to the first treatment. According to studies around 81% of patients achieved greater than 50% reduction on their first treatment.

  6. What are the possible side effects of Botox treatment?
    There are a number of possible side effects of Botox. These are reported side effects by Allergan “BOTOX® can cause serious side effects, such as problems swallowing, speaking or breathing, as well as loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness, and loss of bladder control. Other side effects of BOTOX® include: dry mouth, discomfort or pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, neck pain, and eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, drooping eyelids, swelling of your eyelids, and dry eyes. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to BOTOX® may include: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you are wheezing or have asthma symptoms, or if you become dizzy or faint. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of BOTOX®.”

  7. What is it like to get Botox treatment?
    It is important not to wear anti-perspirant for at least 24 hours prior to your treatment. At your appointment we will apply a thin layer of iodine and once it is dried, sprinkle cornstarch. Once the sweat glands activate, they will turn purple. The area will be marked, cleaned, and injected with Botox. You will notice a reduction of sweating in the following 4 weeks.

  8. How much does Botox treatment cost?

  9. What happens after Botox treatment?
    The Botox will start becoming effective within 2 weeks of injection. Everyone is unique and your results may differ from others. Also, some sweat glands may have not been treated, however please let us know if you do not notice a significant reduction in sweating.

  10. Does insurance cover the cost of Botox treatment?
    Some insurance plans may cover Botox injections for hyperhidrosis after failing several topical medications. However, RevivaMed does not submit for insurance coverage. It is considered a cosmetic treatment.
